Study Abroad Scholarship Information

CNU Funding Opportunities 
"Institutional Study Abroad Scholarships"
This type of institutional funding includes Honors and Presidential Leadership Program (PLP) Scholarships.  There is a limit of one award per student, throughout their time at CNU.  Eligibility is determined by the Office of Financial Aid.  Unfortunately, this scholarship cannot be utilized for break programs (i.e. spring break, fall break, winter break).  This type of funding is restricted to undergraduate students.  

**Applications are available in the Office of Financial Aid, on the 1st Floor of CNU Hall.  

Foundation Funding

"Captains Abroad Scholarship"
This Foundation Scholarship was created to assist students who would not be able to afford study abroad without financial assistance.  Award determinations are made by the Study Abroad Office.  The applicant must be a full-time CNU student and remain in this status throughout the study abroad program. Students who are First Generation, from underrepresented populations, or have high financial need are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must have applied to a study abroad program.  Selected students will provide documentation of acceptance into their chosen study abroad program.  
Categories for application include:

"Luter School of Business Study Abroad Stipend"

"Modern & Classical Languages & Literature (MCLL) Scholarship"
Applications are available to students who are Classical Studies or Spanish majors.  For more information, please contact Mrs. Laura Deiulio, Department Chair (  

National Funding Opportunities
  • The Gilman Scholarship:  The U.S. Department of State‚Äôs Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity.  Funds for semester and summer programs are available for selected students.  The Gilman Scholarship Advisor for Christopher Newport University is Ebony Majeed.  Please contact her for information about the online application.  **Applicants must be a Federal Pell Grant Recipient.  Please meet with CNU's Office of Financial Aid to determine eligibility. 
  • The Fund for Education Abroad:  This scholarship is available for semester and summer programs.  The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the US study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting minority, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.
Region or Language-Specific Scholarships 

  • Boren ScholarshipBoren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.
  • ProjectGo: Project Global Officer (Project GO) is a Department of Defense initiative aimed at improving the language skills, regional expertise, and intercultural communication skills of future military officers. Sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office and administered by the Institute of International Education, Project GO provides institutional grants to U.S institutions of higher education with large ROTC student enrollments, to include the Senior Military Colleges. 
  • Fulbright Summer Institute in the UK:  The Fulbright UK Summer Institutes are three-to-four week programmes for US undergraduate students. Participants can explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK while experiencing higher education at a UK university.
  • Critical Language Scholarship: The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.
  • Freeman Asia ScholarshipFreeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

Students who choose to utilize Non-CNU programs (also known as external programs) for their abroad experience should reach out directly to the program for potential funding opportunities.  Below is a list of some of the Non-CNU abroad organizations.
