Program Description

Ancient Rome and Its Monuments

Information Session!
Wednesday, September 14 at 3 pm in Jefferson Room DSU

CLST 270

This study abroad course introduces students to the art and architecture of ancient Rome through visits to archeological sites and museums. The course covers the visual and material culture of Rome from the foundation of the city in 753 BCE to the rise of Christianity during the reign of Constantine in the 4th century CE. In particular, students will trace the major trends, styles, forms, and techniques of Roman art and architecture within their historical and cultural contexts in order to understand their functions within Roman Society.

In addition to spending ten days in Rome, students will also visit (1) Herculaneum and Pompeii in order to gain deeper insight into daily life in a Roman town and (2) Paestum (originally the Greek colony of Poseidonia) in order to understand the ways in which Greek culture influenced the Romans and, in turn, how the growth of Rome affected her Greek neighbors in southern Italy.
