Program Description

Students will be involved in the first-hand excavation of the Great Synagogue of Vilna, Lithuania, destroyed during the Holocaust and then the remains buried under a local elementary school. Students will be performing all of the tasks from geoscience surveys, mapping, excavating, cleaning of finds, and cataloging, photographing, and daily study about the 500-year famed history of the Jews of Vilnius, known by Napoleon as the "Jerusalem of the North." The work will include learning about archaeology, numismatics, ceramics, architecture, geoscience, mapping, and local culture. the work will include site visits in Lithuania to labor camps built by the Nazis and learning about the Holocaust in Lithuania through visits to museums. Student projects will include photo essay and filming interviews with local Lithuanian students, scholars, visitors to the site and leaders.
