Barbados

Description

Barbados is an independent island nation located east of the Caribbean Sea, in the western Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the Lesser Antilles island chain, with the closest islands being St. Vincent to the West, Grenada to the south west, and Trinidad to the south. The island's climate is tropical with constant trade winds which keep the temperature mild.

Barbados is predominantly composed of limestone coral and has particularly low lying terrain. Currently, The Barbados Labour Party is governing the island lead by a Prime Minister. Barbados has been an independent state in the Commonwealth since 1966 and it functions as a parliamentary democracy. Its Parliament consists of thirty seats. The present government is proposing that Barbados become a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations and have a president that will replace the British Sovereign. This is an unresolved issue that has been debated over for years.

Despite the small size of this island, they have one of the highest standards of living and literacy rates worldwide. Barbados's Human Development Index ranking is among the top 50 in the world. The island is highly influenced by the English, thus making their national sport cricket.
