FNAR 395 Steps to Apply: 1. Create an Account (if you do not have one) 2. Click Apply to the Program 3. Complete all Application Forms This course is designed to introduce students to issues related to the preservation of knowledge and the museum culture of London. At the heart of our enquiry is a discussion of the museum as a particular set of practices and institutions which produce, organize, and structure knowledge. The birth of the museum is entwined with the birth of the modem and its systems of organization and classification, i.e., with taxonomies. At the level of natural science, this begins with the Linnaean systems of classification, but it also carries over into ways of classifying humans, human societies, and nations. In that fashion, museums help to shape the ways in which we understand history, geography, cultural difference, social hierarchy, what is art and what is ethnography, dominance and subordinance. Museums are centrally associated with western practices of collecting and display. To the extent that all museums are involved in practices of collecting, we will focus both on the culture of collecting and also on the culture that has arisen around sharing, preserving, and displaying that history. We will also explore the way that the past is located in museums and how they work with and through memory to engage specific narratives. **Passport Notice** Passport Required by December 1, 2022 for this program. Accepted Students with Passports: Students who have a current passport will need to upload an image of their passport by December 1, 2022 to their enrollment forms. Accepted Students without Passports: Students must apply or renew passports no later than November 15. After November 15, students must pay the more expensive fees with the U.S. government to expedite the application process. Application & Renewal Time: The routine processing time is currently up to 11 weeks and expedited services is up to 7 weeks. We highly recommend apply or renewing your passport as soon as possible. Most countries require at least 6 months remaining time on your passport expiration from your intended date of departure. Example: If your passport expires December 1, 2023, you would need to renew your passport to travel in the summer 2023. **COVID-19 Notice** Travel and Entry Requirements: Each country has established entry requirements and travel restrictions set for foreign visitors and their citizens. The Study Abroad Office is monitoring the policies of many countries to advise students for study abroad. Any country can change their regulations at any time. We encourage all students and their families to monitor the situation in the location(s) to assess if they wish to continue with study abroad. To view the current COVID-19 response for a specific country, we recommend starting with the U.S. State Department (travel.state.gov) and the U.S. Embassy COVID-19 webpage for the country or countries of interest. COVID-19 Vaccination & Entry Requirements: Many countries have opened their borders to vaccinated travelers with some preventative measures (masking, distancing, etc.). In some locations, a booster shot is required to be considered fully vaccinated. An unvaccinated student may be able to travel, but there could be additional testing requirements, quarantine time during arrival, and/or there may be restrictions to certain group activities. In some cases, an unvaccinated student may not be permitted to enter a country. There is a cost for testing, quarantine time, and/or early arrival for quarantine, which may differ by location. Any costs associated with traveling as an unvaccinated person will be an out of pocket expense for the student. Christopher Newport University will not cover the costs associated with these expenses.
