Restorative justice models guide the shape and operation of criminal justice systems in various countries across the world. In this course, students will study the criminal justice systems in Norway and Sweden, both guided by the tenants of restorative justice, while comparing and contrasting them with the criminal justice system in the United States. Students will first study the empirical literature regarding sociological explanation for why crime occurs in various countries. They will then analyze how historical, culture, economic, political, and social factors shape issues of crime and justice in the United States, Norway, and Sweden. Students will then utilize in-person experiences to study the operation of criminal justice systems in Norway and Sweden, compare and contrast those systems with the United States, and analyze short-term and long-term outcomes associated with individuals that come into contact with each of these systems. Lastly, students will analyze what can be learned from the Norwegian and Swedish criminal justice systems as they look for reform efforts in the United States. By completing the study abroad, students will get the unique opportunity to learn from practitioners, stakeholders, and experts in Norway and Sweden that work on issues of crime and justice. They will also get to see carceral facilities, judiciary operations, and other elements of these criminal justice systems focused upon restoring harm, ensuring accountability, and maintaining humane treatment throughout the process.

**COVID-19 Notice**
Travel and Entry Requirements:
Each country has established entry requirements and travel restrictions set for foreign visitors and their citizens. The Study Abroad Office is monitoring the policies of many countries to advise students for study abroad. Any country can change their regulations at any time. We encourage all students and their families to monitor the situation in the location(s) to assess if they wish to continue with study abroad. To view the current COVID-19 response for a specific country, we recommend starting with the U.S. State Department (travel.state.gov) and the U.S. Embassy COVID-19 webpage for the country or countries of interest.

COVID-19 Vaccination & Entry Requirements: Many countries have opened their borders to vaccinated travelers with some preventative measures (masking, distancing, etc.). In some locations, a booster shot is required to be considered fully vaccinated. An unvaccinated student may be able to travel, but there could be additional testing requirements, quarantine time during arrival, and/or there may be restrictions to certain group activities. In some cases, an unvaccinated student may not be permitted to enter a country. There is a cost for testing, quarantine time, and/or early arrival for quarantine, which may differ by location. Any costs associated with traveling as an unvaccinated person will be an out of pocket expense for the student. Christopher Newport University will not cover the costs associated with these expenses.
